| DONNINGTON WOOD SEVEN (PLUS ONE)
We grew up together in World War Two - Shropshire lads and
lads from London, brought
here by their Dads who worked in the newly-created Central Ordnance Depot.
We attended the local Church school, which led many of us to join the
church choir. Later on, we became altar servers too, which led to a deepening
of our Christian faith. The diocese, hungry for ordinands, sent a special
preacher to various churches to awaken the idea of vocation to the sacred
ministry in the minds of young men. The preacher came to St. Matthew's
one Sunday evening and, over the succeeding years, a number of us did
respond and, one by one, we offered ourselves for full-time service.
Most of us have now retired after decades of service in various parishes.
We now have time to reflect on the results of our ministry. If nothing
else, between us we must have touched thousands of lives allover this
country with the teaching of the Christian way and the preaching of the
Gospel of God's love.
The 'Seven' who entered the ministry in those earlier years are: Peter
McCrory, Michael Comer, Edward Jervis, Jim Norton, Keith Jones (the present
Dean of York), John Woods and Bill Woods.
In more recent times, Kevin Palmer has also taken holy orders, making
it the Donnington Wood 'Eight'!
Is God calling you to serve Him in this way? Have a word with your Vicar.
